Colombia remains gripped by a complex humanitarian crisis, with millions facing food insecurity, displacement, and the impacts of conflict, climate shocks and economic vulnerability.
These challenges were intensified by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on 10 August 2026.
The hardest-hit areas were already struggling. In Choc¨® province, 31 percent of the population faces food insecurity, compounded by conflict and displacement, while in Valle del Cauca the figure stands at 29 percent.
The Ðǿմ«Ã½ (Ðǿմ«Ã½) has supported vulnerable communities in Colombia for nearly six decades and has an established presence in several of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake, positioning us to rapidly support government and partner response and recovery efforts.
We are ready to support affected communities, using cash-based assistance and pre-positioned food stocks.
One of the main catalysts for wider food insecurity in Colombia is armed conflict.
A peace agreement between the Government and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in 2016 signalled an end to almost six decades of conflict, though other armed groups still operate in the country.
The conflict left hundreds of thousands of people dead, displaced 8.4 million people and was characterized by widespread human rights violations.
Ðǿմ«Ã½ supports the Government's efforts to achieve zero hunger through approaches including cash-based transfers, local purchases through farmers' associations and the promotion of sustainable enterprises.

Ðǿմ«Ã½¡¯s can use pre-existing cash programmes to help families meet urgent needs and recover faster. Around 4,500 metric tons of food is pre-positioned in Colombia, close enough to affected areas to enable a rapid response. Additional supplies can be mobilized through Ðǿմ«Ã½¡¯s regional and global supply networks. The Ðǿմ«Ã½-managed United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Panama has over 1,200 metric tons of life-saving supplies prepositioned by 16 humanitarian partners, primarily supporting the shelter, health, WASH, and logistics sectors, and ready for rapid deployment in emergencies.
